Churches in Guanajuato for your Wedding

In Guanajuato capital for its rich cultural and artistic heritage, among which are its temples and squares located mostly in the historic center of the city and dating from the colonial era.

Hermosa Basilica de Guanajuato

Below I describe the main churches:

Basilica de Nuestra Señora de Guanajuato

Located in the Plaza de La Paz, right in the center of the city, built between 1671 and 1696, its façade is Mannerist Baroque style, inside you can admire the ancient figure of the Patron Virgin of the City that was a gift from the King Carlos I and his son Felipe II of Spain.

Templo y Plazuela de San Roque

This little square looks like a piece of Seville, as if it had been transported across the ocean. This small square displays a taste of 16th century Spain on all four sides. The construction of the temple dates from 1726 and its façade is in a sober baroque style. In the square, since 1953, the Cervantinos Hors d'oeuvres have been staged, which gave rise to the International Cervantino Festival in 1972.

Templo de San Cayetano

The rapid growth that occurred during the second half of the 18th century around the mining veins of Guanajuato was the starting point for the construction of the temple of San Cayetano in the vicinity of the La Valenciana mine. This was one of the mines that brought the most prosperity to Guanajuato.

The temple of San Cayetano erected as a lookout for the mining town on a crest of the mother vein, is built in Rosa quarry, has the shape of a Latin cross and a beautiful dome over the transept.

Templo de La Compañía

This is one of the main Jesuit centers in the new Spain, with a clear Churriguresque style.

Some consider it the most monumental temple in the city, it sports a neoclassical-style dome dating from the second half of the 19th century, as the original collapsed in 1808. Its façade is made of pink stone with images of saints of the order of the company of Jesus and as in many churches, its original baroque altarpieces disappeared and gave way to neoclassical altars.

Templo de San Diego

The construction of this church is due to the barefoot or minor Franciscan friars. The beautiful doorway of the temple has fine carvings in pink quarry.

In front of this temple is the Jardín de la Unión or Plaza de San Diego, which in colonial times was used for street markets and for traditional festivities. Sometimes it was conditioned as a bullring.

Camino al altar, vestida de novia

They are all really beautiful, the most important thing is to choose the temple that makes you more welcoming, some are very large like the one of the Company or the Basilica if your wedding is very large they are ideal, however if your wedding is smaller, the San Diego Temple is my favorite because of its location and size.

If you want to know more about the temples and see images of each one, I leave you the link where you can find all the information.
