Wedding godfather: roles, attire & speech

Wedding godfather holding lasso and arras

Being the wedding godfather (sponsor) is a key support role for the couple. Here’s what you need to shine—with order and style.

Types of godfather/sponsor

  • Rings, arras coins and lasso (very common in MX).
  • Veiling or Bible/rosary sponsor in religious weddings.
  • In civil/symbolic weddings: vows or ceremony sponsor.

Duties before & during

  • Coordinate with the couple and the officiant/planner.
  • Safekeep and present items (rings, arras, lasso) on time.
  • Assist with entrances/recessional and family photos.

Etiquette & attire

  • Follow the wedding dress code (suit/tux) and palette.
  • Stand out without upstaging the couple; matching boutonnière.
  • Comfortable footwear if there are steps or cobblestones.

Speech & gifts

  • Keep it 2–3 minutes: brief anecdote, wish and thanks.
  • Symbolic gift: frame, cross/rosary, a heartfelt letter to the couple.

Quick checklist

  • Role confirmed (rings/arras/lasso/other)
  • Items ready and under safekeeping
  • Attire aligned with the dress code
  • Speech and timings on your agenda
